Congratulations to Patricia Tait

Last week Ward 5 resident Patricia Tait was awarded the Mayor’s City Builder Award in recognition for her extensive community activism in West Carleton. I know Pat personally and have worked closely with her over the years. She is very deserving of this recognition and I congratulate her wholeheartedly. The detailed media release regarding her award is posted on my website.

My Role in the New Term of Council 2014-2018

City Council recently approved the Councillors who will serve on Ottawa’s various committees and boards. My appointments are noted below. I am looking forward to this next term in office and will keep the priorities of Ward 5 front and centre as I work in the roles delegated to me.

  • Chair, Ottawa Police Services Board
  • Vice Chair, Finance & Economic Development Committee
  • Chair, Member Services Sub-Committee
  • Member, Agriculture & Rural Affairs Committee
  • Member, Audit Committee
  • Member, Mississippi Valley Conservation Authority and Mohr’s Landing/Quyon Port Authority
  • City Council representative for Rural Ontario Municipal Association (ROMA)

Carp River Wetland & Habitat Creation Project

Ducks Unlimited Canada, the City of Ottawa and the Mississippi Conservation Authority have reached an agreement in principle with a private landowner for the restoration of 1.5 hectares of wetland “ox-bow” habitat along 600 m of the Carp River floodplain downstream from Huntmar Dr., for an estimated cost of $500,000.

Ducks Unlimited secured federal approval under the National Wetland Conservation Fund for 50% of the cost of the project. At the Ottawa City Council meeting on December 10, I tabled a motion (which was passed) to request the use of the City’s Environmental Resource Area Acquisition Reserve Fund to fund the other 50% to a limit of $250,000. This is excellent news and I’m pleased that the Carp River Wetland & Habitat Creation Project will be able to continue their restoration work of the wetlands as far as the Village of Carp.

Reminder! Ward 5 Christmas Food Hamper

Residents have until December 19 to drop off non-perishable food items at my ward office, 5670 Carp Rd. All donations will go to the West Carleton Food Access Centre. Thanks to all who have already generously donated.
