Protecting Crops from Cold Weather

This winter, Ontario is providing financial support to farmers to better ensure the survival of apples, tender fruit, berries and specialty crops.

Ontario’s cold winter months can cause damage to crops and reduce yields. To help growers manage this risk and ensure a steady, competitive supply of Ontario grown food, the province will share up to 35 per cent of the cost of weather mitigation equipment such as portable or fixed wind machines, heating and air movement devices, insulating devices, overhead irrigation systems, and crop covers. Growers can be eligible to receive up to a maximum of $31,500 per project.

Growers may apply for funding through the Ontario Crop and Soil Improvement Association ( Applications will be accepted several times over the next couple of years, the first intake being from October 22 to November 5, 2015.

Streetside Spots Pilot Program

The City of Ottawa has launched the Streetside Spots Pilot Project and will be accepting applications until December 7, 2015. Streetside spots are small outdoor spaces created by temporarily re-purposing on-street parking spaces. They contribute to a vibrant and liveable community while sharing the right of way space with pedestrians of all abilities, cyclists and drivers.

A lot of interest has been received from the urban core, but it’s also a priority to receive applications from rural areas. If there are any businesses or community organizations in the Ward 5 area that would be interested in taking part, visit
